Houses, Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester
HOUSES AT CHEETHAM HILL, MANCHESTER - Here is a good attempt to preserve the picturesqueness and interest which were common enough in former days in the modern street architecture of a big town. How the architect avoids the rapacity of the building owner for every scrap of available land we do not know, but certainly the numerous breaks in the line of frontage add much to the effect. Designers will take note of the surface decoration which is made to emphasize or connect various constructive features of the design. With common brick walls below, plaster above with coloured decorations, thick small slates of broken colour, and leaded lights with clear glass, Mr. Wood has produced a result devoid of either monotony or vulgarity.
