NEW INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS IN SALFORD - On Saturday afternoon the foundation stone was laid of a new school connected with Hope Chapel, Liverpool Street, Salford. At present the main portion of the day and Sunday school is carried out under the chapel; and in order to provide more convenient and commodious premises, the new building is to be erected on a site adjoining the present lecture-room and playground. The new building will be of brick, with the facings of pressed brick, relieved by some stonework and blue bricks in the string courses and arches. The site is rectangular, measuring 81 feet by 72 feet; and the plans, which are by Messrs Paull and Robinson, of this city, provide for an assembly room, classrooms in two floors, and a third storey at the front corners in which other classrooms are provided. The total number of classrooms is 17, varying in size from 19 feet by 15 feet to 14 feet by 9 feet, and none less than 11 feet high. These, with the existing infant and other classrooms will afford accommodation for the instruction of about 1,000 scholars. There will also be separate rooms for the superintendent and the library. Provision is mad for supplying warm fresh air to every apartment, and for extracting foul air. It is intended that the entire internal atmosphere should be changed twice in every hour during the time of occupation; and that the temperature should never fall below 55 degrees in winter or rise above 70 degrees in summer. The cost of the building will be about ,6,000 which will be raised by subscription, the superintendent of the school, Mr George Wood of the Grange, having promised to give half the amount.
