MANCHESTER INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR GIRLS – The foundation stone of an industrial school for girls in connection with the Certified Industrial Schools at Ardwick Green, was laid yesterday afternoon at Sale by Mr Robert Whitworth. The land on which the school is to be erected is situated on the Northenden Road, and is about a mile and a third from Sale Railway Station and has been given by Mr R B Clayton. The building will occupy a frontage of 113 feet and a depth of 110 feet. The central part will be three storeys high. The main entrance will be in the centre of the building, and will lead into a hall and thence into corridors right and left. On the right hand side will be placed the girls’ schoolroom, boardroom, matron and assistant matron’s rooms, and offices; and on the left hand, the girls’ sewing room, store-room and waiting room. The dining hall will be situated in the centre of the building, and its dimensions will be 32 feet by 22 feet. The first floor will contain bedrooms for the officials, bathrooms, lavatories etc, and two dormitories for the girls, each 48 feet by 25 feet. The infirmary will be on the same floor, but it will be isolated as much as possible. In connection with the infirmary will be a small surgery, bathroom and nurses’ room. The several sitting-rooms and bedrooms will be heated by open fire-places, and other parts of the building by warm sir, conducted through brick flues from one of Constantine’s convoluted stoves. The ventilating and sanitary arrangements of the building have been planned with much care, the rooms being so situated that constant currents of air can pass through them. Accommodation will be provided for 100 girls, resident matron, assistants, and servants. The total cost of the erection, including the boundary walls, will be about £4,500. .. The architect is Mr H R Price of Cross Street, Manchester, and the builder Mr W Southern of Salford. [Manchester Guardian 16 June 1876 page 6]
