STONECLOUGH - The corner stone of the new mill of the Irwell Bank Spinning Company, at Stoneclough, was laid on Wednesday week. The mill, which is in a forward state, will, when completed, be one of the largest in Lancashire. The site is between the river Irwell and the Manchester and Bolton Canal. The existing cotton storage warehouse, mill chimney, and offices will remain intact, and will be brought into use with the new mill. The mill now being built, which forms one-half of the entire scheme, is 270 feet long, of the customary width, and six stories in height. There are adjuncts one story high on the north and east sides for the purposes of carding and roving. The mill is cellared throughout, and, including the roof, entirely fireproof. being built on the architects’ patent system. The first floor will be used for machinery, and the five upper stories will be for mule spinning, of which there will be 132,408 spindles. There will be installations of sprinklers and electric lighting. The architects and consulting engineers are Messrs. Stott and Sons, Cross-street, Manchester, and Clegg-street, Oldham; and the contractors Messrs. J. Partington, of Chadderton. [Building News 18 August 1893 page 225]

PRESTOLEE -The large spinning mill which has been erected by the Irwell Bank Spinning Company Limited, at Prestolee, was the scene of an interesting ceremony on Friday, when Earl Derby named the engines which had been put in by Messrs E. and J. The mill will contain preparation machinery and 133,000 spindles in 116 mules, four-fifths of which will be used for twist and one-fifth for weft. The main building is 269 feet long by 133 feet wide and six stories high, in addition to the basement. The total floor area of the building is 34,750 square yards, or over seven acres. The mill is fireproof throughout. The height of the mill from the surface of the river Irwell is 120 feet. Messrs Stott and Sons, of Oldham, were the architects and Jonathan Partington, of Chadderton was the contractor, The following are the sub-contractors: - Mason, Thomas Bebbington.
