The Homes was founded in 1921 by the Jewish community of Manchester and Salford with accommodation for 20 boys and 20 girls too delicate to continue their education in ordinary schools and too poor to afford the special treatment they required. The extensions, built at a cost of £12,000, and opened by Lord Rothschild FRS provided home and educational accommodation for 10 additional boys and ten additional girls. Other works included a spacious new assembly hall; a playroom with staff rooms and stores above; as well as other buildings for the augmented administrative, teaching and domestic staff.
