After much debate, the decision was finally taken in March 1892 to build a new school for about 1,000 pupils to replace the Ellor Street, Peel Street, and John Street schools, and an architectural competition arranged. The site of the old St Paul’s John Street School was purchased, and following its demolition the new school was built, the pupils being housed in temporary accommodation in the interim. The new John Street Board School was situated in one of the most densely populated areas of Salford. Such was the pressure on land that the boys’ playground was provided on the roof of the school. The school was demolished in the mid-1960s, one of the last remaining buildings on the Ellor Street clearances.

On the motion of the Chairman, the Board adopted a report from the General Purposes Committee that they had carefully considered the eight sets of plans sent in for the erection of the new John-street school and after consulting with Mr Edward Salomons, they were of the opinion that the plans submitted by Mr Henry Lord of Manchester best met the requirements of the Board and provided sufficient accommodation after allowing for wasted space. The recommendation of the committee on this point was agreed to. [Manchester Courier Tuesday 20 September 1892 Page 7 Column 1]
