Dates of construction in various sources vary considerably - 1870, 1875, opened February 1876, opened 1877. Contemporary newspaper reports indicate that the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank had opened branch premises in Bacup in 1875; however, it is assumed that this was on a different site. In February 1877 proposed plans for new bank premises at the junction of Market Street were recommended for refusal by the local Board. Commencement of construction must therefore post-date this meeting.
BACUP LOCAL BOARD – The Sewage Committee recommended the Board to disapprove of plans of bank premises intended to be erected by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank I Market Street and Union Street, on account of the proposed line of building in Union Street not being uniform with the line of other buildings in the same street. Mr Firth moved an amendment that the plans be passed, an a rather warm discussion ensued, Mr Firth charging the Board with dealing unfairly with the bank directors. The amendment was lost, and the original motion carried. [Rochdale Observer 3 February 1877 page 7]
