The Lloyd Street Schools, which are well towards completion, contain accommodation for 500 boys and 500 girls. On the ground floor are two infants’ schoolrooms 50 feet long by 30 feet wide, with two classrooms and teachers’ room to each department. On the first floor the arrangement of the rooms is similar, and the apartments are approached by separate staircases, the girls entering from Hamer-street and the boys from Camden Street, while the entrance for the infants is in Lloyd Street, so that the departments are entirely isolated Two playgrounds are provided, approached by covered ways which connect them with the main building. The elevation the building towards Lloyd Street has a frontage of 120 feet, and the ends of the main schoolroom project to the front boundary line and are made effective features in the building. The portion of the building between the wings is set back about four feet, and in the centre is a clock tower, rising to a height of 100 feet, in which is placed a large stone recording the date of the erection the school. Above this is the memorial stone, bearing an inscription stating that was laid the February, 1877, by Dr John Watts. The style of architecture is Gothic, and the walls of the building throughout are faced with picked common bricks, the arches, chimneys, and * being stock bricks. The dressings are of stone and terracotta. The rooms are lofty and well-designed and ventilation is effected, as in the other schools, by the use of Messrs Shillito and Shorland's “Manchester grates." The architect is Mr. Henry Lord, and the contractor Mr. James Herd. The total cost of land, building, and furnishing will about £10,000. [Manchester Courier 26 Feb 1877 page 2]
