LONGLANDS, LANCASTER - Lancaster is not rich in tiled roofs or red brick houses, at ail events in the suburbs, and the house called " Longlands." and another near it by the same architects. are conspicuously different in colour and effect from all their neighbours, which look cold and colourless in comparison. The two form a very pretty group together, nestling among the foliage as you approach across the fields from the town. The one we illustrate is a very simple design of plain red brick, the only half-timber work being that which appears in the sketch. coming in most effectively near the entrance doorway. The garden ground round the house is charmingly laid out, and with such taste and effect that it is difficult to realise the whole place has been so recently created from meadow land. The interior of the house is cosy and homelike, and contains some excellent decorative effects of a simple sort. [British Architect 25 July 1890 Page 60]
