The new mill was a fireproof building erected from plans made about 1834 by Mills and Butterworth, architects, Manchester, but no architect appears to have been involved in its erection. Building work commenced on 8 May 1844 and the mill was externally finished in August. Its dimensions were 71 feet in length (seven windows) by 42 feet wide (five windows) and about 70 feet in height, there being six stories, each about 10 feet 6 inches in height. In November 1844 this new mill collapsed with the loss of twenty-one lives.
