A scheme for a line from Clifton Junction to Rawtenstall was promoted in 1844, the Act being passed on 4 July 1844. The Company became part of the East Lancashire Railway on 21 July 1845 and the line opened on 26 September 1846, with a double line from Clifton to Stubbins and a single track to Rawtenstall. Also absorbed into the new East Lancashire Railway was the Blackburn, Burnley Accrington and Colne extension. [Regional History of the Railways of Great Britain. Volume 10]
