It has been determined to erect an illuminated turret clock, with four dials, upon an ornamental pillar in a position that can be commanded from any part of Smithfield Market. Designs prepared by Messrs Paull and Ayliffe, architects, have been adopted, and the works are now in progress. The estimated cost is about £300. [Manchester Courier 6 October 1864 page 3]

TO BUILDERS AND IRONWORKERS.—The Markets Committee are Prepared to RECEIVE TENDERS for the ERECTION of a Lofty Stone and Granite PEDESTAL, for new Clock in the Smlthfleld Market. Also, for the Ornamental IRONWORK, to enclose said clock. The tenders for the mason's work and the ironwork are to be separate. Drawings and specification may be seen at the offices of the architects, Messrs. Paull and Ayliffe, India Buildings, Cross-street, and after Monday, 15th instant.  Tenders are to be delivered at the Town Hall, before two o'clock p.m. on Friday the 19th inst.
