Marlborough School War Memorial (Architectural Competition)
In 1920, Dunkerley submitted a design to a competition organised by his old school, Marlborough College, for a memorial hall to commemorate former pupils killed during the 1914-1918 World War. His design was awarded second prize, so was not realised, but a full description and drawing were published in the 1 April 1921 edition of The Builder. Dunkerley’s design was classical in style and in the shape of an amphitheatre focussing on a circular stage and organ chamber. The stage was large enough for a full orchestra and the building also accommodated six practice rooms with individual entrances. On the walls at either side of the stage were oak memorial panels gilded with the names of the fallen. The winning entry was by another former pupil, William Godfrey Newton (1885-1949), who went on to design other buildings for the school. [RF]
