This building is now in course of erection for Mr James Addison by Messrs Neill and Son, builders from the designs of Mr James Redford FRIBA of Manchester. It will contain all the requisites of a good hotel, including a billiard room for two tables; a club room; a vaulted basement containing stores for wine, sprits and beer etc. The lower portion of the facade is of stone from the neighbourhood of Huddersfield, and above stock bricks intermixed with stone are used. The site of the hotel is near the church and by the side of the "Maypole" raised by subscription some years ago to replace the ancient one when the village lads and lasses tripped around it, little dreaming of the changes that would subsequently take place in the district. Pendleton, originally a rural village, became "of old the residence of merchant kings" and the west end suburb of Manchester, From that distinction it has gardually changed to a busy district, wherein manufactories, steam engines and operatives abound; illustrating very forcibly that change we referred to last week in our remarks on the Artisans' Dwellings Bill as taking place every two or three generations in the character of populous places and large towns.
