A memorial to the late Dr McCormick, Dean of Manchester, will be dedicated by the Bishop of Manchester next Tuesday in the Cathedral yard. The monument takes the form of a cross and stands near the south porch. It is some 14 feet high, and its general lines have been kept simple. The design has been largely the outcome of the material of which it is made. The cross is of Tilberthwaite slate, a beautiful dark green Lakeland material of great durability. Shaft and head are out of a single stone, the largest monolith that has been available for a number of years. In the centre of the head facing west the pelican with her young, the ancient Christian symbol of self-sacrifice, is carved in vigorous relief. On the eastern side are the symbols of the four evangelists in a flatter relief. The socket stone bears the following inscription “In memory of Joseph Gough McCormick 1920-1924 Dean of Manchester. The cross is raised on a wide base of Stancliffe stone on which are carved the words “See that ye love one another fervently.” Below are the Cathedral arms in bold relief. The cross is the work of Messrs Earp Hobbs and Miller, sculptors, Manchester, the stone base being made by Messrs Nuttall of Whitefield. The design is by Professor Hubert Worthington.
