BOLTON. In 1856 five new cotton mills were commenced in Bolton and the neighbourhood viz:- a large and handsome mill at Gilnow belonging to P R Arrowsmith Esq for 65000 spindles, another large mill at Lostock for 60,000 spindles belonging to Messrs Heaton of Doffcocker, one in Westhoughton belonging to Mr Pilkington for 30,000 spindles (all by Mr Woodhouse, architect); one in Great Bolton belonging to Mr James Marsden and one in Little Bolton, belonging to Messrs Heaton. The two latter are in a forward state of completion, being partially filled with machinery. Mr Arrowsmith's buildings are covered in, Messrs Heaton's in Lostock are partially covered in and Mr Pilkington's at Westhoughton is also covered in. In addition to this we have to announce at least four other new mills and an old one which is undergoing extensive alterations. Messrs Cannon and Haslem are about to erect another mill in Halliwell for 40,000 spindles; Mr John Harwood one for 30,000 spindles near Tanner's Hole; Messrs Wallwork & Sussum one at Farnworth for 30000 spindles (all by Mr Woodhouse, architect); Mr Joseph Ainsworth a large one in Halliwell (Mr Holt, architect) and the Mount Pleasant Mills, which have been standing a considerable time, are undergoing alterations under the superintendence of Mr James Lomax, surveyor, and are intended to be worked by Messrs Hoyle & Vickers. These will make an addition of ten mills and other are spoken of.
