On Wednesday Miss Staveley, of Old Sleningford Hall, laid the foundation-stone of a new chancel to the church at North Stainley, near Ripon, besides a vestry with organ chamber on the north side, and a porch on the south side. The style adopted is Decorated. The work will be built of stone from Miss Staveley's quarry, with dressings inside and out of Railton stone. The present chancel will be re-seated as part of the future nave, the plaster ceiling removed, and the timbers hoarded and formed into panels with pitch-pine; a warming apparatus will also be provided. The chancel will be furnished with oak stalls for clergy and choir, rich tile pavement on floor, and the roof of pitch-pine m panels. The chancel is being built at the cost of Miss Staveley and Miss Lee, of Old Sleningford Hall, as a memorial to the late Mrs. Staveley, and the other portion by the parishioners and assisting friends. NORTH STAINLEY - The foundation-stone of a new chancel to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, at North Stainley, near Ripon, was laid on the 25th ult. The present church was built by the late Mr. Staveley some fifty years since. It is a simple parallelogram, 36ft. by 24ft., devoid of any architectural pretension. The additions will consist of a chancel, 24ft. by 18ft., convert- ing the present church into a nave, a vestry with organ-chamber on the north side, and a porch on the south side. The style adopted is Decorated Gothic. The new work will be built of stone from Miss Staveley’s quarry, with dressings inside and out of Rainton stone. The present church will be reseated as the future nave, the plaster ceiling removed, and the timbers boarded and formed into panels with pitch-pine. A warming apparatus will also be provided. The chancel will be furnished with oak stalls for clergy and choir, rich tile pavement on floor, and the roof of pitch-pine in panels. The extension will give 47 additional seats. The total cost of the work will be about £1,000. The builders are Messrs. Kay and Son, of Rainton, and Mr. John Metcalfe, of North Stainley. Mr. R. J. Withers, of London, is the architect.
