The original theatre, with seating for 1070, opened in 1907 on the site of wooden circus. It was converted to cinema use in 1914, (opened 14 September 1914). It was transferred to Essoldo (through Gateshead Empire. Palace. Co.) 21st March 1948. Variety was revived in 1950 but it closed on 18 January 1964 after the Christmas pantomime. Disused; demolished 1978.
