Chequers was gifted to the nation in 1917 and has been the country residence of the Prime Minister since 1921. The South Drive, approximately 750 metres long, was constructed in 1921 on what was probably the line of the Elizabethan approach. The entrance is marked by two red brick lodges and gates. These are attributed to Milne and Phipps on the basis of their drawing exhibited at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1921
