In early 1905 land was purchased at Cheadle by W R Deakin Limited of Wigan and Evesham and in 1907 tenders were invited for well-sinking and railway sidings However, the planned jam factory was never built.  The site was considered ideal as it was served by railways on three sides and within 7 miles of Manchester where Deakin's business was expanding rapidly. At the time of purchase, the cost of sugar was rising so it was decided to delay the building of the jam factory and fruit was planted that autumn instead. Other properties and land were also purchased by Deakins in Stockport Etchells.
