ENLARGEMENT OF THE HEATON NORRIS RAILWAY STATION - The growing amount of goods traffic has forced the London and North Western Railway Company greatly to enlarge the goods department at Heaton Norris, and also to erect another passenger station for the better accommodation of the public. The designs for the former have been prepared by Mr Woodhouse, the Principal Superintendent of the line; and those for the latter have been executed by Messrs Starkey and Cuffley, architects, of Manchester. The new station will be in the style of that at Longsight. The scheme to be carried out in enlarging and improving the property will, as far as we can gather, embrace the following details. The warehouse will be extended to the company's boundary wall opposite Christ Church, by which a double amount of storage will be obtained. The area in front of the present station will be added to the goods department, for the reception of property not affected by the atmosphere, and a line of rails, near the warehousing, studded with turntables, will be continued in front of and in the place of the old station. The stables, beer-house, and cottages adjoining, being railway property (and fronting the public road) will be entirely removed, as well as Mr Gouldthorpe=s coal wharf, which latter is intended to be the site of the new passenger station, in addition to a residence for the clerk, it being held essential that some authorised individual should be constantly on the premises. On the opposite side (the permanent line) it is contemplated to bild a waiting station for parties intending to proceed by the down train. The site of the beer-shop, now occupied by Mr Pell, will constitute a portion of the carriage approach to the station, while foot passengers coming up St George's Road, will have the advantage of reaching the booking office by an easy flight of steps. The whole of the works when completed will form a very comprehensive and convenient suite of offices, warehouses and other accessories. The warehouse is expected to be completed by 2 January 1853; the passenger traffic will be somewhat delayed, owing to the requirement of the necessary legal notices being given to the occupants of premises belonging to the company [Stockport Advertiser].
