Bala Banking Company commenced business in 1864 at Tigid Street, Bala, subsequently opening branches at Corwen and Dolgellau. The bank failed in December 1877, the business being acquired by the North and South Wales Bank. The directory of 1878 lists the North and South Wales Bank at Tigid Street, presumably at the premises formerly occupied by the Bala Banking Company. However, in 1881 the North and South Wales Bank  had under construction a new branch at 56 High Street, Bala to the designs of Edmund Kirby (now HSBC). It must therefore be assumed that Richard Owens’s scheme of 1875 was not progressed.
