New Tower and Spire, Christ Church Salford
TOWER AND SPIRE TO CHRIST CHURCH, SALFORD —For some months' workmen have been employed in erecting a tower and spire to Christ Church, Salford, which edifice was previously without either. The erection which has a very handsome appearance, was made under contract, by Messrs Patteson, of Oxford-street, from designs by Mr Shellard, architect, of King-street, and does both parties great credit. The tower has an octagon base, and cover relieved by eight circular columns, with Corinthian capitals of the order, known as Jupiter Stator, surmounted by a landing and balustrade. The spire is a diminishing octagon, with beaded angles. The height of the structure from the level of the church-yard to the top of the spire is about 120 feet. The whole was finished last week, when the scaffolding was removed. [Manchester Courier 1 November 1845 page 8]
