NICHOLSON MEMORIAL TOWER, LEEK, STAFFS - This clock tower, which is in course of erection, is being presented by Sir Arthur Nicholson to the town of Leek. The inscription panel on the front will read as follows: Erected by Sir Arthur and Lady Nicholson to the perpetual honour and cherished memory of their son, Lieut. Basil Lee Nicholson, Royal Field Artillery, who fell in action near Ypres, Belgium, July 24, 1915; and to all the gallant sons of Leek and the surrounding neighbourhood whose lives were so bravely sacrificed in fighting for their country during the Great War, 1914-1919. All honour give to those who, nobly striving, nobly fell that we might live. " The panels at the side will record the names of the fallen, and on the back a door leads to the staircase which gives access to the balconies on the first floor level; these are designed for the purpose of speeches on special occasions. The whole of the external facing is to be of Portland stone, the flags and steps of York stone. The surrounding space is to be laid out. The clock, with illuminated dial and Westminster chimes, is by Messrs. Gent and Co. The contractors are Messrs. E. and A. Frith, of Macclesfield, and the architects Dr. Percy Worthington and Mr. Hubert Worthington, of 178, Oxford Road, Manchester. This drawing was at the Royal Academy this year.
