After designing Rainford Hall for Colonel Richard Pilkington, James Medland Taylor became the architect for the Pilkington Brothers glassmaking business in St Helens. No 9 Tank House is one of the few remaining factory buildings from that time and has been attributed to J M Taylor by Pevsner. It is the earliest remaining gas-fired continuous tank furnace in Europe and has now been converted into a display gallery for the World of Glass Museum, to which it has been connected by a bridge over the canal.
