Samuel Woodhouse, the owner of a successful wine importing company in Liverpool, bought Norley Hall around 1820. He died in 1834 and his eldest son also named Samuel Woodhouse, inherited the family firm at a young age. Samuel worked for the company in Sicily, then married his bride, Eliza, in Valletta Cathedral, Malta, in 1844, before returning home to Norley. The wealthy young newly-weds, aged 24 and 20 at the time, then began extensive alterations to the design of A B Clayton. The old Georgian house was stuccoed, extended and remodelled with gables and Tudor windows. They commissioned Edward Kemp to plan the gardens in 1855. The couple lived in Norley Hall for the rest of their lives, and were buried in Norley churchyard.
