Alterations and additions to form a hospital for incurables. Mauldeth Hall, previously the residence of the late bishop of Manchester (Prince Lee) and the late W R Callender MP was purchased by the Board of Management in 1881. The hall itself was converted into female wards and a new wing constructed for males. According to the Manchester Guardian report, work was scheduled for completion in March‑ April 1882 but the hospital was finally opened on 17 September 1882

On August 1st the corner‑stone of the extensions to Mauldeth Hall, Heaton Mersey, near Manchester, was laid by Mr Richard Armistead. The hall and grounds were bought by the committee of the Northern Counties Hospital for Incurables for £10,000, and the hall is being altered and extended at an outlay of £6,800, to accommodate 100 patients. The architect is Mr Charles Heathcote, and the contractors are Messrs Wilson, Toft, and Huntley, of Manchester. [Building News 12 August 1881 Page 200].
