CREWE - The late Mr. F. W. Webb, mechanical engineer to the London and North-Western Railway Company, left a large sum to be devoted to the erection, endowment, and maintenance of an orphanage, to be built in Crewe or the immediate vicinity, for children of both sexes, not necessarily those who have been bereaved of both parents, of deceased London and North-Western Railway employees. On Monday last the orphanage was formally opened by Mr. G. H. Claughton, chairman of the London and North-Western. It occupies nearly five acres of land, given by the railway company. Designed on the lines of Chelsea Hospital, the building, which has cost upwards of £20,000, was designed by Mr. J. Brooke, FRIBA., of Exchange Street, Manchester, and constructed by Messrs. Normanton, of Manchester, with Councillor Goulden, of Crewe, as clerk of works. [Building News 22 December 1911 page 870]
