New Build

In 1910 proposals were drawn up by T. Cook & Son Architects of Hudsons Court, Corporation Street, Manchester for the erection of showrooms and warehouse in Oxford Street for Shaw’s Ltd. The new building, known as Oxford House, opened as J. & J. Shaw – Cabinet Makers Upholsterers and House Furnishers. The building was often referred to as ‘Oxford House’ and this name was carved in relief above the buildings central doorway, along with the name ‘J. & J. Shaw’s’.

By the end of the 1970’s the Shaw’s company were closing-up business and plans were drawn up in 1981 to convert the premises into an amusement arcade to the ground floor, pool hall to the first floor with a bistro restaurant located on the basement floor and offices to the upper floors. The building was then converted into the Cornerhouse Cinema in 1985.
