New build

The new parish hall of St Luke the Physician at the Hollyhedge centre of Wythenshawe is finished and will be opened by the Bishop on Saturday. The architects, Messrs Taylor and Young, had to exercise great economy in the design of the building, but have relieved it from too much plainness by its proportions, colour and light. The hall will seat 400 people. It has a permanent stage with a rake on it, and the long south wall is pierced by five tall windows, coming down to the floor, which open like doors to the site reserved for the church. The north wall has smaller windows high up. The unplastered inside walls are putty coloured. The ceiling itself is yellow, and the joists below are painted with aluminium on the descending sides and blue on the flat face below. The six steel beams which carry these joists are putty coloured on the sides and red on the lower face. The doors are bright blue with black framing. The same blue is used on the outside doors, and at the main entrance the brilliant blue will be seen under the red-painted soffits which carry the flat canopy. The warm stone-coloured Blockley brick has been used for both hall and rectory, which is now being completed. The hall will cost about £2,500. It adds considerably to the amenities of the centre, and the corporation have diverted a road to give a better perspective approach to the site [Manchester Guardian 8 April 1936 page 11]
