Peel No. 1 Mill, Gordon Street, Bury
PEEL SPINNING AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, CUTTING THE FIRST SOD – On Saturday afternoon last the cutting of the first sod prior to the laying of foundations of a new spinning and manufacturing cotton mill which is being erected under the auspices of the Peel Spinning and Manufacturing Company Limited took place. The site of the new mill lay just behind Chamber Hall, in a field previously occupied by the Brunswick Cricket Club and close to the Bury to Tottington Railway. The mill was to be five storeys and a cellar and connected with a siding from the railway. It was to hold about 70.000 spindles, with machinery for preparation and was to be fireproof throughout, on Messrs. Stott and Son's patent fireproof principle. The ceremony was performed by William Smethurst. The architect and contractor presented him with a silver miniature spade in a morocco case inscribed: “Presented to William Smethurst Esq on his cutting the first sod for the Peel Spinning and Manufacturing Company’s Mill, Bury. February 21st 1885.”
Construction: 1885 Patent.
