New Build

Built for George Knowles & Sons, the six storey mill earned the local nickname of the "Glass Factory" based on its unique form of construction. Two sides of the building were constructed entirely of glass held in place by light iron columns. Woodhouse had resorted to this expedient due to the restricted nature of the site, the proximity to the company's two adjacent mill buildings causing a severe lack of natural light. To fireproof the mill, the floors were constructed of concrete on brick arches, a technique never used previously in a British factory. French contractors were imported to carry out the work. So flimsy did the structure appear, that it is said that insurance companies were hesitant in offering cover. Whether the building was finally demolished as a result of unsatisfactory reports is unclear.
