Pownall Hall Wilmslow
In 1886 Henry Boddington (II) purchased Pownall Hall at Wilmslow for his residence, and again employed William Ball as architect. Ball’s contribution at Pownall Hall has gone largely unnoticed, overshadowed by the work of the Century Guild in the furnishing and decoration of the dining and drawing rooms. But like the earlier public houses, literary inscriptions and stone carving appear externally and internally. Ball was probably also responsible for the first floor nursery and day-room, a room which may have provided the inspiration for Henry Boddington (III)’s subsequent decision to become an architect.
