LIVERPOOL - The memorial stones of a new Primitive Methodist Church in Prince's-road were laid on Wednesday by the Mayor of Liverpool. It adjoins schools and vestries built in 1877 and will be 67 feet long by 46 feet wide, accommodating 600 persons on ground floor and 300 persons in a gallery surrounding three sides of the building. At the rear of the pulpit is an organ gallery, with accommodation for a large choir. The main entrance is by three doorways leading into a vestibule 25 feet by 16 feet from which access is gained to the ground floor as well as to the staircases leading to the gallery. The chapel is in the Romanesque style, the main elevation to Prince's-road consisting of a central facade and two wings. The whole will be carried out in Yorkshire “shoddies” and red Runcorn stone dressings. The pewing and all interior woodwork will be of pitch pine, and the rostrum will be in walnut and pitch pine polished. Special attention has been paid to heating and ventilation. The work will be carried out under the superintendence of Mr. Richard Owen, Westminster Chambers, Crosshall Street, Liverpool (who was also architect for the schools); Mr. Swale acting as clerk of the works. The total cost the new building, exclusive of land, will be £3,500, the earlier erections having cost £3,000. [Building News 27 March 1885 page 508]
