NEW PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHAPEL AT STRETFORD - Yesterday afternoon the memorial stones of a new Primitive Wesleyan Chapel and schools were laid at Stretford. The edifice is situated in King Street, within a short distance of the old place of worship, which is not now sufficiently spacious for its purpose. The chapel will accommodate upwards of 600 persons. It will be erected in the early English style of architecture, of red brick and Yorkshire stone. The schools, which are to be erected in the rear of the chapel, provide accommodation for 70 infants and 360 elder scholars. There are eight classrooms, four in the lower and four in the upper storey. The cost of the whole is estimated at £5,000 and of this sum £1,000 (exclusive of the sums received in connection with the ceremonies of yesterday) has been subscribed, and another £1,000 is expected to be realised by the sale of the old chapel and some cottages which belong to it. The architect is Mr A Morry, Meadow Street, Moss side, and the builder Mr Gell of Stretford. [Manchester Guardian 9 October 1877 page 8]
