New build
Colonel Richard Pilkington, a partner in the Pilkington Brothers glassmaking business at St Helens, bought the Rainford Hall estate in 1885 and immediately commissioned James Medland Taylor to build a new house. The building is in the Jacobethan style using red brick with sandstone dressings and is believed to incorporate an older stone farmhouse. Pevsner thinks that the lodge, stables and cottages could also be by Taylor. The Hall is now given over to offices.
