Ramsbottom Cottage Hospital, originally known as The Aitken Memorial and Jubilee Cottage Hospital and subsequently as the Aitken Memorial Cottage Hospital, hospital was built in 1898-9 to plans by C S Haywood of the architects' practice Haywood and Harrison of Accrington, and was formally opened on 18th April 1900. Its construction was funded by Mrs Mary Aitken, a member of a local mill owning family. The hospital, which originally had nine beds, was extended in 1936 to include extra facilities including a separate children's ward to plans by Bradshaw, Gass & Hope.  Built with a pavilion plan of a central entrance with flanking male and female wards, and Queen Anne Revival detailing, the cottage hospital is typical for its date, demonstrating little further innovation.

Ramsbottom Cottage Hospital Committee today decided to build a children’s ward and a new operating theatre. The building costs will be about £4,000 and are to be defrayed by Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs A T Porritt, of Ramsbottom and Grange-over-Sands. [Manchester Guardian 6 February 1936]
