DEVELOPMENT OF THE RAWSON FIELD ESTATE. One of the biggest building schemes ever projected in the history of Todmorden has just been decided upon in connection with the opening of the Hare Spinning Mill. Owing to the great lack of houses, especially in that particular locality, the gentlemen interested in the Hare Spinning Co. recently acquired the Rawson Field Estate, end have decided to erect thereon, according to an estate plan which has just been adopted, 187 houses, intended solely for the use of employees of the Hare Mill. The estate is bounded roughly on its four sides by Ashenhurst Road on the east, Burnley Road on the south, Crosslee Road on the west, and the railway line on the north. At the Town Council meeting on Wednesday, the plans of 55 houses were passed, and the remainder will be proceeded with as quickly as possible. The main streets will all be 12 yards wide, and there will be one of these, called Leigh Road, from Crosslee Road to Ashenhurst Road, cutting across the estate, for the easy access of the workpeople to and from the mill, and another at right angles leading from Burnley Road and called Newton Road. Two other roads will run parallel to Leigh Road, one above and the other below it, and there are to be three classes; of house—one consisting of parlour, kitchen, and two bedrooms; another having three bedrooms; and the third class, about 60 in number, facing Crosslee Road and the higher of the three parallel roads, having entrance hall, parlour, kitchen. Scullery, three bedrooms, and bathroom, with bay windows and garden in front. The houses will be of Accrington facing bricks, and each house will have its own back yard. etc. The architect is Mr. Rowland Thomasson. of 87, Mosley Street, Manchester, and Mr. W. H. Bullivant is acting as manager for the Estate Co. Work is to be commenced on Monday next. [Todmorden Advertiser and Hebden Bridge Newsletter Friday 31 January 1913 page 5]
