Built in the form of a Roman wayside tomb, the Memorial incorporates many symbols of the Anti-Corn Law League, of which William Rawson was treasurer for many years, in its carvings and decoration. It is possibly the finest monument in the churchyard and was said to have erected by fellow members of the former Anti-Corn Law Committee. As yet no information has been found in confirmation of this or the name of the designer. The memorial marks the graves of:

WILLIAM RAWSON (1787-1857) Born Greasely, Nottinghamshire a merchant; with extensive railway interests and a director of the London and North Western Railway. He died from injuries received in a road traffic accident outside St Chad’s Church on Cheetham Hill Road. Alighting from an omnibus and crossing the road to the flagged pavement he was struck by a horse and received serious head injuries which proved fatal. The memorial in the form of a Roman wayside

HENRY RAWSON (1819-1879) A stockbroker and part owner of the Manchester Times, Henry also served on the Anti Corn Law League committees. He married Hippolyta Peacock, daughter of Henry Barry Peacock, another part owner of the Manchester Times.
