Charles Mortimer, a stockbroker in the city married Elizabeth (Bessie), daughter of Beriah Drew and cousin of Richard William Drew. Following their marriage in 1876 they lived on the Woodfield estate and in 1878 commissioned R W Drew to rebuild or remodel the house. After the Mortimers moved out of the house in 1895, it became a home for the care, instruction and training of backward children, but by 1904 it was described as a general nursing home, continuing as such until just before the house was demolished in 1935.
