On 13 September 1858 the newly-built Town Hall and Corn Exchange, which cost over £2,500, was opened on a site immediately adjacent to the bridge over the River Weaver. However, the foundations proved inadequate and ten years later the greater part was taken down and re-built at a cost exceeding £1,050. It was re-opened on 11 August 1868.
