As a result of flooding in November 1866, when it was found that the level of Salford Bridge was too low, the level of the new Waterloo Bridge was to be raised 4 feet 6 inches. [Manchester Guardian 6 March 1868 page 3] At a meeting of Salford Council held on 4 September 1867 it was stated that the bridge would probably be completed in “a month to six weeks” but the roadways would require a further time. [Manchester Guardian 5 September 1867 page 3].

CITY OF MANCHESTER – To Engineers and Iron Founders – The Improvement Committee of the Corporation are desirous of receiving tenders for the Wrought and Cast Iron and other metal work required in the reconstruction of the Waterloo Bridge over the River Irwell. Plans and specifications may be seen on application at the office of the city surveyor, Town Hall. Tender return 7 April 1866

CITY OF MANCHESTER – To Stone Masons Bricklayers and Excavators – The Improvement Committee of the Corporation are desirous of receiving tenders for the several works required in the reconstruction of the Waterloo Bridge over the River Irwell and in forming the approaches thereto. Plans and specifications may be seen on application at the office of the city surveyor, Town Hall. Tender return 7 April 1866
