Reform Club, Dale Street, Milnrow
MILNROW, NEAR ROCHDALE - The Butterworth Liberal Association have decided to accept the plans sent by Messrs. Butterworth and Duncan, architects, Rochdale, in competition for their club premises at Milnrow, near Rochdale; the buildings consist on the ground floor of lock-up shops, kitchen, etc., on the first floor, billiard-room, for two tables, reading-room, committee-room, bar, etc., and on the upper floor an assembly room to seat 750 persons. The walls are proposed to be built of stone faced with pitch-faced pierpoints and ashlar dressings. [Building News - Friday 17 December 1886 page 967]
NEW REFORM CLUB, MILNROW - On Saturday evening last the corner stones of the new Reform Club, now in course of erection in Dale Street, Milnrow, were formally laid by Mr James Duckworth of Castleton Hall, Rochdale, and Mr Robert Brearlley, the Milnrow centenarian. The new club, which is being built on the site of the old Wesleyan chapel, used as a club for many years by the members of the association but now pulled down, will be provided with a kitchen and the usual offices and conveniences in the basement, two lock-up shops and the main entrance to the club on the street level, committee room, ante room, reading room and billiard room for two tables on the second floor and a large assembly room to accommodate 800 persons on the third floor. The cost of the new structure will be about £1,400 and it is anticipated that the premises will be finished about the end of next September. The architects are Messrs Butterworth and Duncan, South Parade, Rochdale, and the contractors Messrs James Heathorn and Sons, Milnrow, for masonry; Messrs Taylor and Company for joiners’ work; and Messrs Pickles Bothers, Leeds, slaters.
