Reredos: All Saints Church, Newton Heath
ALL SAINTS NEWTON HEATH - The chancel which was added some time since to All Saints' Church, Newton Heath, at the cost of Mr John Taylor, of Brookdale, has just been enriched by the erection Of a handsome reredos at the expense of the same gentleman. The design is in keeping with the architecture of the chancel. Itis executed in veined alabaster, and consists of five carved panels, divided by small buttresses and surmounted with elaborate traceried gables, the centre gable rising higher than the rest, being 12 feet 6 inches from the floor to the top of the cross: The centre panel is of puro white alabaster, and contains a sculptured representation of "The Last Supper," on a gold background. The subjects in the other panels are the passion flower, vine and wheat, pelican, and the emblems of All Saints', which are exquisitely carved. The reredos terminates.at each end with a panelled buttress supporting an angel kneeling, and holding the arms and crest of the donor. The walls on each side of the reredos and along the north and south sides of the chancel are lined with dark red Devon marble inlaid with bands of porphyry, Sienna and Irish green marbles, and terminating at the ends with carved panelled pilasters in alabaster. In the north wall an alabaster credence table has been inserted, and on the south wall the following inscription has been cut on a marble slab "The reredos in this chancel was erected to the glory of God, and in memory of Anne Leng, wife of John Taylor, of Brookdale, who died 27th October, 1879." The work has been executed by Messrs. Earp and Hobbs, of London and Manchester, from the design of Mr Henry Lord, architect. of this city. [Manchester Guardian 9 February 1881 page 8]
