This memorial stands on an island at the junction of Hale Road and Wicker Lane and takes the form of a wheel-head cross mounted on an octagonal shaft rising from a square pedestal and octagonal base. Each face of the pedestal shows the names of the dead beneath some decorative carving. Cocker was the designer, and Stanley Taylor of Hale Barns the builder. The unveiling ceremony took place at 3.00pm on Saturday 18 June 1921 and was performed by Mrs Buckley Brooks of the Manor House, Hale Barns, whose son Archibald was one of the soldiers commemorated on the memorial. Later the names of the Second World War dead were added. [Richard Fletcher]
