Rochdale Deaf and Dumb Institute, Church Lane, Rochdale
A GIFT TO ROCHDALE. THE MAYOR OFFERS AN INSTITUTE TO THE DEAF AND DUMB - The Mayor of Rochdale (Councillor J. E. Jones) has offered to build a new institute for the use of members of the Rochdale and District Deaf and Dumb Society who number about 100. A site has been secured in Church Lane at a modified rent from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Besides living accommodation for a caretaker, the building will comprise a large room for services and meetings, reading rooms for men and women and a billiard room. The only condition the Mayor has imposed is that the work will continue to be conducted on non-denominational lines. [Burnley Gazette - Saturday 10 November 1906 page 2]
INSTITUTE FOR THE DEAF AND DUMB, ROCHDALE - An institute for the deaf and dumb of Rochdale is being erected on a site in Church Lane. Messrs. S. Butterworth & Duncan are the architects, and Messrs. W. A. Peters & Sons the builders.
ROCHDALE DEAF AND DUMB INSTITUTE - The above is a photograph of the Deaf and Dumb Institute which the Mayor of Rochdale, (Alderman J. E. Jones) has erected for of the society at his own cost. In addition to presenting the members with a new up-to-date building, Alderman Jones has, during the last year of his mayoralty raised an endowment fund for the institution which already amounts to nearly £1,200. MAYOR OF ROCHDALE'S GIFT. NEW DEAF AND DUMB INSTITUTE - Yesterday, at Rochdale Miss Hull, of Bexley, Kent, formally opened, in place of an old institute which has now become inadequate, a new Deaf and Dumb Institute, the gift of the Mayor, Alderman Jones, a Manchester merchant. The building. which is near the Towa Hall. has cost £1,000, while the townspeople have subscribed £1,200 as an endowment fund. The Dean of Manchester. presided, said there were a hundred deaf and dumb people in Rochdale and the building would serve as a club house, and a religious and educational centre.
