THE ROSE AND CROWN, PENDLETON - Mr. Rylance, solicitor, appeared in support of the application of Fred Hardy, of the Crown Brewery, Manchester. for permission to make structural alterations at the Rose and Crown Inn, Broad Street, Pendleton. He said the premises were at present in a dilapidated condition and unfit for people to live in. It was, therefore, intended to pull down the house and erect a new one. Mr. John Bowden submitted plane of the proposed new house. [Salford City Reporter Saturday 31 August 1889 page 7]

The original Rose and Crown opened about 1823 at the corner of Broad Street and Booth Street, Pendleton. When Hardy’s Crown Brewery took over this old and somewhat dilapidated pub in 1889, they applied for and were granted permission to pull down the house and erect a new one. Two years later, the Rose and Crown Hotel opened. The brewery also rebuilt the next-door shop which later became the offices of the Salford City Reporter. The pub was demolished in 1971 in the final phase of the Ellor Street redevelopment.
