SALEM CHAPEL NEW SCHOOLS,  STRANGEWAYS – The members of the Methodist New Connexion worshipping in Salem Chapel, Strangeways, have just completed the erection of a commodious building, on a plot of ground adjoining the chapel, for day and Sunday schools. Hitherto the Sunday school has been held under the chapel and a day school has been conducted by private individuals. In the new building it is intended to have a certified master for a day school. The building is a plain substantial two-storey structure, of brick with stone dressings, and has been erected by Messrs R Neill and Sons from the plans of Messrs Clegg and Knowles, architects. The upper floor is devoted to one large room, capable of accommodating 600 persons, and furnished with a hoist that communicates with a roomy kitchen in the cellar. The ground floor is occupied by eight classrooms (several of which are separated by moveable divisions), a library, lecture room, and infant schoolroom. The rooms are well-lighted both by night and by day, are ventilated and warmed by hot air. The cost has been about £2,600. [Manchester Guardian 17 November 1870 page 5]
