SAVINGS BANK A new savings bank, on a scale commensurate with the requirements of the town, now course of erection. For a considerable length of time the premises used for the purposes of savings bank have been found wholly inadequate for the greatly increased business of the bank. The vacant land in Wood Street has been chosen as the site of the new savings bank, and the erection of the building is being rapidly proceeded with, having been in progress for several weeks. The new savings bank will be of hewn ashlar, and the Roman style of architecture. The building will consist of two lofty stories, and, besides the porter's rooms, will contain a large public office and other requisite apartments for the business of the bank, such as writing rooms, safe, etc. The principal dimensions are: length, 56 feet; width, 34 feet; height, to the square, 40 feet. The building will be a detached one with an area and iron palisades in front, and, each end, passage of nine feet wide, to the back of the premises. Mr. J. E. Gregan, of Manchester, is the architect, and Messrs. Hay and Co., of the same place, the contractors. The masonry, slating, etc, has been let to Mr. Lewis Holland, of Bolton.
