Savoy Cinema, Huddersfield Road, Waterhead, Oldham
The Savoy Cinema opened on Monday 12th October 1925 with stalls seating 560 and a balcony with 330 seats. There was also a ladies' waiting room inside the main entrance. It was situated at Waterhead, on eastern side of Oldham and thus was more of a suburban cinema. In the early days of silent movies musical accompaniment was provided by a trio under the direction of Mr Denny. A British Talking Pictures (BTP) sound system was later installed. According to the Kinematograph Yearbook, the Savoy Cinema’s seating capacity had been reduced to 725 by 1953. The cinema closed in 1959 and was subsequently demolished.
NEW CINEMA OLDHAM - Good progress is being made with the construction of a new picture house, the Savoy Cinema Oldham, which is likely to open about Whitsuntide. The theatre will seat about 900 persons. The managing director of the new company is Mr. Robert Woolley, and the directors Messrs. Saville Dawson (Oldham Welding and General Motor Co.), Robert Fletcher (White Swan Hotel). William Fletcher (Heleshaw and Co., engineers), Mr. Wrigley (Hollinwood Gas Co.), and the secretary Mr. Fielding. The capital of the company is £15,000. The architects for the new building are Messrs. George Collins and Sons (sic) Oldham. The electric lighting and power plant has been laid down to the specification or Mr. E. Rudland Wood. NEW OLDHAM CINEMA - Good progress is being made with the construction of the Savoy Cinema, Oldham, which is due to open about Whitsuntide. It will have seating capacity for about 1,000 persons. Messrs. Springers are installing the seats. whilst the. electric lightings is being done by Messrs. W. Caton and Sons, Oldham. Two Ross projectors with high intensity arcs are being installed. NEW CINEMA - Another new cinema in this area, the Savoy Cinema, Oldham, has opened to the public. Mr. E. Rudland Wood, who managed the Cromwell P. H. , Manchester, is Manager. Two Ross projectors. with high intensity arcs, have been installed at the Savoy, which has seating accommodation for about 1,000 persons.
